Kiwi.com: Industry event, Mobile World Congress, drives over 100% increase in long-haul travel to Barcelona

- The period leading up to the start of the event, sees the number of bookings from Asia to Barcelona doubling, while those from North America triple

Prague, Czech Republic – The largest event in the mobile communications industry calendar, MWC Barcelona, takes place in the city from 26-29 February this year.
Kiwi.com data shows that long-distance flights booked to Barcelona for arrivals between 23-26 February, has grown by 106%, compared to the week before (16-19 February). The main continent of origin for travel to Barcelona during this period remains Europe, however, reservations from Asia – where many mobile technology manufacturers are located – doubled compared to the week before the event, while bookings from North America tripled. Americans, Germans, Koreans, Swedes, and Chinese are among the top nationalities booking with Kiwi.com to travel to the capital of Catalonia during these dates.
Tickets were purchased on average 38 days prior to the trip, with the majority – 37% – booking 21-60 days in advance, while 15% planned further ahead, booking as early as two to four months in advance. Travelers booking return trips on Kiwi.com, plan to spend on average four days in the city, and trips of up to three days, or four to six days are the most popular during this period, accounting for 93% of the total bookings.
The average price of the ticket was at €144, with short-haul flight tickets averaging at €97, medium-haul at €149, and long haul at €555 — figures are similar to the same period last year, other than the long-haul flights, which were 20% cheaper this year.
