Kiwi.com data reveals Barcelona is the busiest airport this summer, Gatwick sees the most cancelations

August 08, 2022
  • Bookings for June and July 2022 saw a 68% increase compared to the whole summer of 2019

8 August 2022 – Travel tech company, Kiwi.com, saw bookings for June and July 2022 surpass pre-pandemic volumes.  Compared to the whole summer of 2019, the months of June and July 2022 saw 68% more bookings from Europe.  For Kiwi.com customers July has been the most popular month to get away and the first week of July the busiest week to fly since the start of the pandemic.  Barcelona’s airport saw the most traffic so far, followed by London Stansted, Lisbon Portela, Leonardo da Vinci – Fiumicino and Vienna airports, according to Kiwi.com’s data.

The high increase in demand for travel, combined with the airline and airport staff shortage, resulted in a climb in cancelations.  In July, the cancelation rate by airlines was 4.5%, compared to 2.3% in April and May.  Analyzing data from bookings made on Kiwi.com, cancelations badly affected Gatwick, Vienna, Václav Havel Prague and Copenhagen airports.

For August, the most booked airports are Barcelona, Budapest, Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino, Palma de Mallorca and London Stansted, while most cancelations have been seen at UK airports.   Destinations from the UK most affected are Budapest, Mykonos and Tirana.

In comparison to the other summer months, August is seeing decreased traffic, however, this can change as 41% of travelers book their trips two weeks in advance or less, out of which 9% buy their ticket just four to six days before the departure, while 17% purchase them up to three days before the departure.
