Spain the clear winner in the battle between Mediterranean countries to attract tourists

June 02, 2021

During April and May, Kiwi.com registered more than 40 million searches from across Europe for travel to Spain between June and September

Spain also leads the ranking for the top booked destination, closely followed by Italy and Greece

2 June 2021 – European travelers are choosing to visit Spain over and above other Mediterranean destinations this summer. April and May reservation data from Kiwi.com, the leading travel technology company, showed more than 40 million searches were made to travel to Spain between June and September and is so far the most popular booked destination for the summer. The Iberian country leads in the Mediterranean battle to attract international travelers, being ahead of both Italy and Greece.

Compared with Spain, the searches carried out during this period to other countries in ‘the Med’ are considerably lower: Italy and Greece accumulate 23 million each; France, 20 million; and a little further down the rankings are the non-Mediterannean, Portugal, with 14 million searches and Turkey with 12 million. Confirmed bookings are following a similar pattern, with Spain leading the way, closely followed by Italy and Greece and, further behind, France and Portugal.

“The Mediterranean countries, with their dream beaches and sunny climates, are a great attraction for European travelers. Since the beginning of May, in line with the gradual lifting of restrictions and the growth of the vaccinated population, we are seeing a positive increase in demand for this summer. Bookings to Spain have gone up by 153% compared to January, and it shows that the sector, although at a slow pace, is on the road to recovery”, states Mario Gavira, Vice President of Growth at Kiwi.com.

The data extracted by Kiwi.com reveals that the European nationalities heading to Spain, with the most reservations, are the French, Czech, Italian, German, English, and Spanish travelers, with an average expenditure of 308 euros on stays between one and two weeks. The Spanish, however, are booking to travel to France, Italy, Croatia, Egypt, and Morocco.
