Cheaper tickets and no travel restrictions: Easter holidays in Europe

12 April 2022 – Kiwi.com has analyzed travel data for the Easter period 2022 which reveals the effects of European countries loosening pandemic restrictions and opening up borders allowing more visitors. From Rome in Italy to Barcelona in Spain – many European capitals have become a final destination for this Easter weekend. 

Easter is one of the most popular times to go on holiday in Europe. Europeans performed more than 106 million searches on Kiwi.com to find the perfect Easter weekend destination. The top searched destination being Barcelona, with London and Paris taking the second and third place respectively. 

Compared to Easter 2021, when travel restrictions were still in place for the majority of countries, Kiwi.com registered an increase of 407% in bookings for this Easter period and exceeds pre-pandemic booking numbers of 2019 by 5%.  

This Easter, Milan, London, Rome, Barcelona, and Paris will become the cities with the most busiest airports according to bookings data from Kiwi.com. The most sold route for the Easter weekend is Prague to Rome with the second being Vienna to Palma de Majorca and in third place Vienna to Barcelona. Europeans also plan to ski in the Italian Alps this Easter, with Milan being the most booked destination through Kiwi.com. 

As for the prices, it’s now much cheaper to travel for Easter. The average ticket price of the short-haul flight (up to 3 hours) in 2022 became 65 Euro cheaper than in 2019. Same for the medium-haul flight (between 3-6 hours) at 89 Euro cheaper than in 2019.
