Budapest before London: The change of first place

  • Travelers globally are heading towards the Hungarian capital this year 
  • Young singles and couples choose Budapest for their getaways

2 November 2021 – After being the long-time favorite and most popular destination for Kiwi.com customers from around the globe, London has lost its top spot to the Hungarian capital, Budapest, Kiwi.com data* shows.  The already popular destination reached top place of global travelers preferences, leaving behind other traditionally popular destinations such as Vienna, Milan, Paris, Barcelona, and Berlin.  

Who is visiting the “Queen of the Danube”?

Travelers from Russia, with the most popular routes being Moscow – Budapest and Saint Petersburg – Budapest.  Searches on the Kiwi.com site of these routes, from the period 20 August – 20 October, reached almost 2 million.

The flow of Russian visitors is followed by visitors from the U.K, Ukraine, France and Germany as well as visitors from the south – Israel, Italy, Greece, Portugal and Spain. 

Young singles and couples choose Budapest for their getaways

The largest group visiting Budapest is in the age category 26 to 40 years old, taking 44% of total bookings.  They are followed by young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 years old, at 32%.  One fifth of the visitors are between 41 and 60 years old, while travellers over the age of 60, make up only 4%.

Kiwi.com booking data shows that purchases to Budapest are often for two passengers, most likely couples traveling to the city together, making up 40% of the bookings.

How long do they stay? 

Perfect for a long weekend getaway, 41% of Budapest’s visitors stay from one to three days and most of them arrive on Friday.  Visitors choosing to prolong their holidays to 4-5 days make a total of 37%, while others choose Budapest for a full week vacation.
