A proprietary algorithm for self connection is key to the success of Kiwi.com

May 20, 2021

Kiwi.com’s automation provides travelers with a wide variety of options available at very competitive fares, from combining classes in the same itinerary to optimizing multi-destination travel

20 May 2021 – What’s behind the success of a travel platform? In the case of Kiwi.com, the leading travel technology company, the answer is a proprietary algorithm known as Virtual Interlining (providing self-connect itineraries), that gives travelers greater flexibility, freedom of choice and savings when booking travel. This algorithm allows Kiwi.com to search for routes and combinations of transport that other online platforms cannot see, finding the best and often the cheapest route possible.

“Building customized virtual routes is the hallmark of Kiwi.com. With our customer-centric, self-connecting system, travel options become infinite and time and costs can be significantly reduced. We are convinced that this algorithm will become more and more popular in a  post-pandemic world where full-service airlines will lose ground to low-cost carriers,” said Mario Gavira, vice president of growth at Kiwi.com.

Combining the work of developers and big data, the automation of the search process has multiple benefits for the traveler, among them:

A wide variety of options: Kiwi.com’s self-matching algorithm allows users to combine air and ground transportation from route content of over 800 carriers, including those that do not have agreements with each other, resulting in the ability to offer cheaper routes that other search engines cannot access.

One payment for everything: convenience is one of the most valued aspects of travel. With Kiwi.com’s algorithm, it is not necessary to book the bus, train or plane separately, but can be done simultaneously with a single payment.

Mixed classes: travelers can combine First, Business, Premium Economy and Economy classes in the same itinerary, a useful tool for travelers who want to fly in a more comfortable class for long-haul flights, but don’t mind traveling in economy class for short-haul flights. In fact, pre-pandemic, 72% of the bookings that included First or Business class were mixed class itineraries.

NOMAD: this tool, ideal for multi-destination travel, shuffles destinations to create an optimized itinerary, so the traveler can save time in planning. For trips with two or more stopovers, Kiwi.com calculates the most economically efficient route. For example, on a trip involving 10 different cities, the algorithm checks up to 180,000 single/one-way flights and then uses them to make combinations that will give the best route.

The ability to find great deals in one place: recently, the company introduced Kiwi.com Deals, a new tool to find discounted flight prices, detected from the user’s home airport and based on a km/price calculation. To locate these deals, Kiwi.com performs more than 2 billion price checks per day. It does this by drawing on existing airline offers, Kiwi.com offers, hidden fares and travel tricks to find the cheapest routes compared to standard prices. Taking a European origin as an example, today travellers can find roundtrip flight offers from Madrid to Tangier for € 10, to Heraklion for € 47 and to Tokyo for € 393 for travel in June and July.*
